A Calgary video game player has been crowned the first World Champion on classic video games. Over the weekend of May 31-June 3rd, Dwayne Richard, 31, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, defeated an international field of classics videogame superstars to win the 1st Annual Classic Video Game World Championship, co-sponsored by the Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard and the famous Funspot Family Fun Center in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire. Playing on five different titles: Wizard of Wor, Robotron, Pole Position, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Qix and Joust, Richard barely edged out Donald Hayes of Salem New Hampshire by less than 1% in a standings created by converting overall high-score performances into percentile rankings. "It was the closest contest we have ever judged," said Walter Day, Chief Scorekeeper at Twin Galaxies, who has monitored video game championships for the electronic gaming industry for 20 years. "The champions of this contest will be listed in the next edition of Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records, the industry's official record book. At the end of the event, the players cast ballots to select the titles for next year's event, scheduled for June 6-9, 2002 at the Funspot Family Fun Center in Weirs Beach, NH. The contest games will be Galaxian, Carnival, Donkey Kong, Jr., Elevator Action, Crystal Castles, Arkanoid and Tempest.
