According to the history of MAME, v0.1 was released on February 5th, 1997. It supported Pac Man, Ms Pac Man, Crush Roller, Pengo and Lady Bug....now it supports over 3,200 ROM sets. If you want to take a history lesson, visit the Old MAME page.
