------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1...> What it is
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tiny 310k executable coded in VC++

Supports both the Windoze and DOS versions of ZSnes (v1.337 onwards)

Intuitive and easy to use

Keeps generated files nice and tidy (screenshots, save states etc)

Inbuilt ZIP and GZIP support (no DLLs required)

Full ZSNES option support - Command line, ZSNES.CFG and ZGUICFG.DAT. It supports both reading
and writing of the CFG and DAT file. Before launch of a game the desired settings are written
to the two files. Upon exit, the settings are read in again, so as to pickup any changes you
have made whilst running ZSnes. Any changes are automatically stored in the games' individual
settings. Similarly, if you already have these files with your preferred settings, they will
be read in and used as the default settings upon program startup.

Supports general settings and individual settings for *every* rom

Supports .SMC, .SWC, .FIG, .SFC, .1 (multiple part images), .058, .078, .USA and .JAP file
formats. Also supports uninterleaved images.

Full rom header and stats retrieval including checksum validation (checksum calc for Broadcast
Satellaview roms is also supported)

CRC calculation of rom data (excluding any copier header data)

Supports .BMP, .PNG, .PCX and .JPG picture formats for skins/screenshots. When screenshots are
taken in ZSnes, they are automatically renamed to the ROM name from which they came, moved to
the snapshot directory and converted to your preferred format.

Supports multiple screenshots in slideshow form (as many or as few as you'd like for each game)

Can automatically compress all non-compressed roms/save states in one action

Cyclic save states - This maintains your current save state, and a history of save states back,
the last being the oldest. The amount of save states to use (upto 10) is configurable per game.
When using this feature, you only need to use ZSnes' quick save key, which is F2 by default. The
FE will handle the backup history automatically in the background.

Multiple CD append-scan (allows you to scan several different CDs for roms and store them in
the database).

Supports compressed saved states - This includes .SRM, .ZST, .SPC, .ZMV, .CHT and .IPS.
Automatically extracted upon game launch. Automatically compressed upon game exit.

Skinnable and colour configurable

Generates a ROM Report - including
Full stats for each located rom
	Zip errors/corruption problems encountered
	Duplicate roms (by CRC)
	Zips containing no roms
	Zips containing multiple roms
Total rom library size (compressed and uncompressed)
	Total number of good/bad checksums
	Total number of unique roms

Has simple single click launch (from rom list or click screenshot)

Has a random game launch

Freely distributable

It is meant to be complimentary to the functionality that already exists in ZSnes. It is not
meant to replace the ZSnes GUI in any way. In fact there are still some things I've left that
you can only set via the GUI, like specific key settings for example. However, I still believe
it has a comprehensive level of option-support. It is provided as an alternative in the hope
that others may find it useful and interesting.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2...> What it isn't
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Super Nintendo emulator. This application cannot play SNES games without ZSnes and rom
images.

Compatible with ZSnes versions prior to v1.337

Compatible with any other emulators (Although, depending on interest, support for different
emus will be considered. The code has been written in modular fashion, and as such large
sections of it can be considered 'common' to other FE projects, such as ZIP support and the
user interface).

Related to a previous ZSnes frontend named ZFE. This is Actually ZSnesFE, or ZFE for short.

Open-source (although it may well be in the future)

Something to be sold - it's freeware

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3...> 1-2-3 quick setup
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note : If you have the previous beta version of ZFE installed, you must delete the old ZFE.DAT
and ZFE.CFG due to file format changes. Old skin zip files should also be deleted.

1) Extract the contents of ZFE.ZIP to your ZSnes directory

2) Launch ZFE.EXE, and when prompted, setup the FE's configuration
(See 'Frontend configuration dialog' for further details if necessary)

3) When the main dialog appears, simply press 'Scan' or button '4' on the control panel
layout below to create a games database

And that's it. You should now be able to tinker with settings, create a report and launch your
games. ;)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4...> Main dialog
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main dialog is not resizable, but has been designed to fit onto the screen at 640x480 for
those of you who insist on emulating old-hardware, on old-hardware. ;)

Here is the control panel button layout and explanations:

 _________ _________ _________

-------------------------------------
9) Flip the dialog from left to right
-------------------------------------
      - Use this to activate the left-to-right dialog-flip

----------------------------
10) Create a full rom report
----------------------------
      - Use this to create a currently listed rom report in the save directory
      - (See 'Rom Report')

You can hover over all control panel buttons to activate tooltip text.

You will also see a checkbox at either the top left or right (depending on which flip-mode
setup you're using). This toggles the control panel/logo on and off. When the control panel is
shown, the logo is hidden to avoid clutter.

The snapshot should also be considered a button, as when it is clicked ZFE will launch the
currently selected game. If the mouse pointer hovers over the snapshot, it will change to the
"GO!" symbol to indicate this.

The games list can also be used to launch the game by double clicking the mouse, or by pressing
enter. You can type the first few letters of a game to skip to it in the list. Use cursor and
page up/down keys to move through the list.

In case you hadn't noticed, the About box is accessible by clicking anywhere on the main skin,
or selecting About... from the system bar drop down menu (click Mario next to ZFE on the title
bar)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5...> ZSnes configuration dialog
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here you will see all the options in the zsnes/w.cfg, most of the options in the zguicfg/w.dat,
and the command line only stuff. Simply select your desired options. Please refer to the ZSnes
documentation for info on what the options do.

The 'Number of Save Slots' slider allows you to configure how many save states will make up a
games save state history. When set set to zero, ZFE's automatic save state history handling is
disabled. (See 'Cyclic saving')

Depending on which config button you have selected, you will see a slightly different dialog.
If the config button for the currently selected game is used, you will see five additional
fields at the bottom:

Force HiROM
Force LoROM
Force NTSC timing
Force PAL timing
Uninterleave ROM image

These are only included for a specific games settings, as it would not be advantageous to set
them globally.

If you change a specific games settings, such that they are different from the default (As set
with 'ZSnes Cfg (General)'), you will notice a button appear at the base of the dialog. This
'Reset to Default' button simply allows you to set a games settings back to the defaults (as
would appear on the general settings dialog) in one click.

The 'GUI Options' button takes you to the ZSnes GUI settings dialog. The settings contained
herein are considered separate from the data on the main configuration dialog. For this reason
it has it's own, independent 'Reset to defaults' feature.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6...> Frontend configuration dialog
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is quite simple. You have:

------------
1) ZSnes EXE
------------
      - This is the ZSnes executable to use (with full path). The path determines which
      - zsnes/w.cfg and zguicfg/w.dat files to use when launching games.

-----------
2) ROM Path
-----------
      - This is the full path to where your game roms are. Sub-directories located here will
      - also be scanned by ZFE.

-----------------
3) Save directory
-----------------
      - This is the full path to the desired save directory. This must writeable. An error
      - message will be displayed if it is not.

----------------
4) Snapshot path
----------------
      - This is the full path to the desired snapshot directory. This must writeable. An error
      - message will be displayed if it is not.

----------------------------
5) ZSNES Additional switches
----------------------------
      - Here you can add any additional command line switches you desire. This is mainly for
      - future ZSnes changes, as everything as of ZSnes v1.337 is configurable via the FE cfg
      - dialogs.

----------------------------
6) Slideshow Delay (seconds)
----------------------------
      - This is the delay, in seconds, which the FE will use when displaying multiple
      - snaphots in slideshow form.

------------------
7) Snap Image Type
------------------
      - Use this to select which format will be used by the frontend when it converts and
      - renames any snapshots you take. The snapshots will be placed into the
      - 'Snapshot path' set above.

---------------------
8) Scan append prompt
---------------------
      - Select this if you wish to have a scan append prompt after each scan. This is only
      - applicable when scanning multiple CD's for roms. If you wish to use this functionality,
      - swap CD's when you get the message "Do you wish to perform an append scan?" and answer
      - 'Yes'. Repeat process until all CD's have been scanned.

---------------------
9) Games List Options
---------------------
      - Here you can set which filename to use when displaying compressed rom records (archive
      - name or internal name). You can also select which roms to display, with either Jap,
      - Non-Jap or both.

The first four path fields are not editable. Simply use the browse button located next to each
of them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7...> Colour preferences dialog
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here you can change the individual colour settings for each of the dialog components. Located at
the top is a mini preview window to show you the colours of the currently selected dialog
component. The function controls are:

---------------------
1) The colour sliders
---------------------
      - Use these to setup your desired RGB values for the various main dialog components.

----------------------------
2) Foreground and Background
----------------------------
      - Use to select the foreground (text) or background colour for the currently selected
      - dialog component.

-----------------
3) All as current
-----------------
      - This sets the foreground and background colours of all the other dialog components to
      - the ones setup for the currently selected dialog component.

---------
4) Invert
---------
      - This simply inverts/swaps the foreground and background colours for the currently
      - selected dialog component.

-------------------------
5) Brightness up and down
-------------------------
      - Should be self-explanatory. Adjusts the foreground/background brightness up/down for
      - the currently selected dialog component.

I won't even bother to explain what Copy/Paste do!! ;)

The dialog components section should also be self-explanatory, except perhaps for
'Progress Caption'. This is the colour used for either the "Scanning... Please Wait.." or
"Compressing... Please Wait..." captions that appear over the progress bar during these
operations.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8...> Skin selection dialog
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This allows you to select your desired skin. the function controls are:

------------------
1) Available Skins
------------------
      - This gives you a list of available skins (based on what ZFE finds in the 'skins'
      - subdirectory).

---------
2) Author
---------
      - Simply the author of the skin

--------------
3) Colours.dat
--------------
      - This allows you to dump a file called colours.dat, which contains all of the current
      - colour setup information. Use this when you want to create your own skins.
      - (See 'Creating skins')

ZFE comes with one skin, Default, designed by GibberGibb and myself. More skins are available
for download at the MAMETrix website. And of course, you can create your own.:)
See 'Creating skins'.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9...> Scanning
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The scanning engine will obtain a carts internal information, in much the same way as SMC.COM or
UCON64 do on a per-rom basis. ZFE however has a much easier interface (it scans all roms for you
automatically) and produces more accurate results, which can be nicely laid out in a generated
report. The engine supports all rom formats, as described in the features list above. Images can
be non-compressed or Zipped/GZipped. Sub-directories below the main rom path will also be
scanned.

The following information is obtained/calculated:

ROM Name - embedded cart name (unknown chars from jap titles are replaced with spaces)
License - license holder
File Size - the uncompressed file size
Compressed - yes/no compression status (and compressed filesize if applicable)
Header - yes/no copier header present
ROM Speed - SlowROM or FastROM
Bank Size - LoROM or HiROM
ROM Type - cart makeup (ROM, RAM, SRAM and any special chips like SFX, DSP, SDD etc)
ROM Size - in SNES terms (MegaBits - The actual size is shown if it's different
             from the embedded internal size)
SRAM Size - save ram in SNES terms (KiloBit) and PC terms (KiloByte)
Country - country/region of origin
Version - version number in the form 1.<0..255>
Checksum - the roms calculated checksum (Broadcast Satellaview rom checksum calculation is
             also supported)
CRC - the roms calculated CRC, excluding any copier header data
             (Only displayed in the report)

The scanning procedure can be on the slow side, especially if you have a lot of compressed roms.
This is because all compressed rom data must be extracted, so that ZFE can calculate the roms
checksum and CRC. The scanning percentage bar will let you know how much of this process is
complete.

You may notice occasions where the information obtained for a rom is incorrect. This can be for
a couple of reasons. The first is rom image corruption. The engine has been written such that it
tries very hard to ascertain rom info from corrupted rom images (not corrupt zip files), but it
does partly rely on data found inside the image. If this is garbled then the engine may fail to
identify the rom correctly. The second is where the FE just plain gets it wrong. I expect this
type to be few-and-far between. But if you do discover a rom image where the info is wrong, or
you have an "Unknown (HEXVALUE)" field displayed, please drop me a mail, letting me know what
rom it is, and where you obtained it from. This will help me to improve the scanning engine if
necessary.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10..> Rom Report
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This function allows you to easily dump the contents of the ZFE scan database to a plain text
report. It contains a record of all the information described in the 'Scanning' section for each
located rom. It can also contain (depending on what has been located in your rom set) various
sub-sections. These are:

-----------------
1) Duplicate roms
-----------------
      - This shows any roms that have been identified as duplicates, based on the rom image's
      - generated CRC. Duplicates will be identified, regardless of the way in which the roms
      - are stored. Images from different copiers or in different in states of compression will
      - be identified. Duplicates are shown in variable size groups.

--------------------------
2) Zips with multiple roms
--------------------------
      - This shows any zip files that contain multiple roms. For database purposes, only the
      - first located rom is scanned, as this is the one the emu would use. The number of roms
      - is given in brackets.

-------------------
3) Zips with errors
-------------------
      - This shows any zip files with errors that were discovered during the scan process. The
      - possible errors are:

      - earlier zip file format
      - internal error (central directory invalid etc)
      - failed CRC check
      - file is invalid (corrupted)

--------------------------
4) Zips containing no roms
--------------------------
      - This simply shows any zips that were discovered to contain no suitable rom image.

----------
5) Summary
----------
      - This contains the following information:

      - Library size - shows the total library size in megabytes/gigabytes (and
                                  uncompressed size if applicable)
      - Number of roms - shows the number of located roms
      - Number of unique roms - shows the number of unique roms
      - Good checksums - shows the number of roms with good checksums
      - Bad checksums - shows the number of roms with bad checksums
      - Duplicate roms - shows the number of duplicate roms, followed by the
number of unique roms (sets) this represents.
      - Zips with multiple roms - shows the number of zips with multiple roms
      - Zip file errors - shows the number of zip file errors encountered
      - Zips with no roms - shows the number of zips discovered with no roms

It also important to note that the 'Games List Options' as described in the 'Frontend
configuration' section affect the content of the report. If you have selected to only view Jap
roms, and their zip filenames (where applicable) for example, then that's what will be shown in
the report. There will be a header and footer note to indicate the report is only for Jap roms
or non-Jap roms if you have it setup this way.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11..> Snapshot creation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ZFE automatically handles snapshot library creation. Whenever you take a snapshot in ZSnes, it
will be converted to your preferred format (from the usual four, depending on your preference),
renamed to the originating roms' name and moved to your configured snapshot directory. Each
image has an index appended onto the rom name to allow multiple screenshots. You can have as
many snapshots for each game as you like.

The format of the new filename is:

<ROM NAME>_<INDEX>.<DESIRED PICTURE FORMAT>
e.g. allstars_1.png

Tips:

1) Have a key such as 'S', setup in ZSnes to take snapshots (by default there is no key
assigned. Maybe this should be looked at ;) ) It's configurable on the Misc/Game Keys
panel in the ZSnes GUI. This will save the two step tedium of pressing F1 and saving the
      snapshot each time.

2) Make sure you run the latest version of Cowering's excellent GoodSNES utility *first* to
ensure your rom names are meaningful. This will help you distinguish any snapshots created
more easily. If you perform rom renames after taking screenshots, the snapshots will no
longer be associated with the originating rom (as this is done on a rom filename basis),
and they will be wasted space in the snapshot directory.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12..> Cyclic saving
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With this feature you can select how many save states make up a games history.

This is how it works:

You save to slot zero for the first time. Then when you save to slot zero again, the current
slot zero is moved to slot 1, and so on.

A couple of tips for making this behave correctly:

1) Press F4 when you first start ZSnes to quick-load from the latest save (This will always
be the .ZST file, or save slot 0).

2) Press F2 to quick-save to slot zero (when saving allow a couple of seconds between F2
presses. This is to ensure it works correctly, as the FE detects save state changes
      externally in a polling loop)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13..> Auto-compress roms and save data
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: You must scan first for this feature to be available.

This feature automatically compresses any uncompressed roms and save data. It also ensures all
save data is located in the configured save path. If you have been running ZSnes with no save
path specified, ZFE will not only compress but move any save files it finds in the roms' own
directory to the save path.

Compressed roms are placed into the directory from where they came. Roms are not compressed if
there is an existing zip file in the directory with same filename (<ROMNAME>.ZIP).

The save data files are dealt with a little differently. First of all, saves that exist in the
configured save path are considered the 'master' saves. If no save file exists for a game in the
save path, the save file in it's own directory will be used (where present). If a save zipfile
already exists for a rom, any uncompressed save files will be moved to 'zfe_save_exists' in your
save path. All other unmatched save files are moved to 'zfe_unmatched' for your inspection. Save
files will be considered unmatched if there is a game with the same name, but not in the same
directory.

e.g.
the directory TEST\THIS contains allstars.srm
the directory TEST contains allstars.zip

allstars.srm will be considered unmatched, and moved to the 'zfe_unmatched' directory
accordingly.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14..> Creating skins
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The skins allow you to customize the look of the main dialog. Both the dialog background and the
control panel buttons can be skinned. Image and setup files are collected into a zipfile (images
can be in any of the four formats). Image types can be mixed in a single skin zipfile. Here are
the necessary filenames:

Note : <fmt> signifies image format type (BMP, PNG, JPG or GIF)

------------
      - This is optional. It is used to override the default missing snapshot picture (which is
      - the one used with the default skin). It should be the standard snapshot size of 256x223.

----------
logo.<fmt>
----------

      - This is optional. The logo is transparently drawn onto the 'logo' region of the dialog.
      - The logo does not get 'flipped' when the dialog flip mode is activated. This means that
      - text can be used on the logo that would otherwise be backward when the dialog is
      - flipped. This image is also automatically hidden when the control panel is activated so
      - as to avoid clutter. The image can be upto 280x250. It is automatically centred in the
      - 'logo' region. Black, or palette index zero signifies regions of the image *not* to be
      - drawn.

-----------
colours.dat
-----------
      - This file is generated for you by ZFE. It contains colour setup information.
      - See 'Skin selection dialog' for details on how to create it.

--------
skin.dat
--------
      - This is a plain text file that contains the skin name, author and any overrides for the
      - tooltip text. Keywords can be in any case, but you must follow the keyword = "text"
      - format. Author and skin name are required, but all tooltip text overrides are optional.
      - You may use as many or as few as you like. The various default tooltip text strings ZFE
      - uses when no overrides are provided are given in the complete example skin.dat below:

      - Author="StatMat"
      - SkinName="Default"

Provided is a plain mask of the main dialog (located in the 'skins' dir), with points/pixels to
represent the dimensions of the snapshot, the games list and the rom stats window. The inner
points/pixels for each object represent the corner pixels of the objects. The outer points
simply represent 10 pixels out from this to aid in object frame creation.

You should get a general idea of what can be done from the 'default.zip' skin that came with
ZFE.

I have found it best to black out the area behind the snapshot, as demonstrated with the default
skin. This prevents unwanted flicker when the image is being updated.

As for artistic tips/methods, I'm a little new to this myself. Just do what I do. Experiment. ;)
I intend to write a further document based on the findings, of myself and others in the near
future. Please feel free to post any suggestions you might have on the ZFE message board. You
will be credited for anything that makes it into the document. ;)

To make things a bit easier, when ZFE is running it dumps the contents of the currently selected
skin zip file to your save directory, in a subdirectory called 'zfeskintmp'. The generated
colours.dat file is also dumped to this directory. This means you can make changes to your skin,
rezip them into the original skin zip file with WinZip and reload the Skin to see your changes.
Be sure to keep WinZip open, as it'll stay pointing to the 'zfeskintmp' directory, and you can
just keep clicking 'Add' for your updated files. But do *not* use this as a storage area, as ZFE
deletes this directory upon exit.

15..> Known issues
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the slightly unorthodox way in which ZFE paints it's main dialog, you may occasionally
notice portions which do not update correctly. Just simply minimize/maximize and everything
should be ok. There's not much that can be done about this, as it is ultimately Windoze cocking
up. Now there's a surprise eh? ;)
