ABOUT:

The EarthBound Sprite Editor lets you easily edit 1144 sprites that appear in the
SNES RPG, EarthBound. This is an unofficial PK Hack sprite editor, but I think
spaanoft will quickly make this the official one, as it means he doesn't have to
code the editor for Windows ;)

This is a DOS program, so go to the DOS prompt and use it. For those of you people
who have no clue what DOS is, here are some tips. First, go learn about DOS. Second,
while you're doing that, in Windows, you can probably drag the ROM icon onto the
program and it should work.

With the EBSE, you can:
  - Edit sprites
  - Copy/paste sprites
  - Clear sprites to a selected color
  - Flip horizontally and/or vertically
  - Tomatoize the sprite :)
  - Save the sprite to a .bmp file
  - Save the changes to the ROM
  - Destroy geosynchronous satellites

There are of course weird little goofy things in the EBSE, mostly Mr. Saturn related.
Beware Mr. Saturn.

CONTROLS:

  - Press the arrow keys to select a sprite.
  - Use the mouse to select other stuff.
  - Press Esc to quit.
  - Send me money.

This program is a little different than most in how the mouse works. In the EBSE,
you just need to have the mouse button down to select something, you don't need to click
it. This is good for some things, bad for others. Oh well. It's a pain to try to
get clicking to work. Take what you can get, and be happy.

OTHER STUFF:

This was made in a few hours using Delorie's DJGPP and the Allegro game programming
library. I used them for quick development time, compared to me trying to learn
Windows programming and trying to create what would have been as crappy as this version.

Thanks go to Meeellla for the nice PK Hack pic, Umi for the voice sample (which is to
be used in an upcoming game, Mr. Saturn vs. Hitler), spaanoft for pulling his hair out,
and those people who actually appreciate my work and thank me and such. For those
who just say gimme gimme gimme and could care less about how much work went into this
(you all know who you are), be glad I didn't have this program delete your system files.

This program can edit the real EB ROM, a possibly corrupt version of the EB ROM that is
floating around out there, and the Mother 2 ROM.

********* I WILL NOT SEND YOU ROMS! **********

So do not ask, or I'll have to find a good way to make you suffer, mwa ha ha. Same thing
if you ask me where to find ROMs.

KNOWN BUGS:

****************** *******************

- OKAY. PAY ATTENTION. THIS IS A DOS PROGRAM. IT NEEDS TO BE USED IN DOS MODE. WHAT
IS DOS MODE? GO LOOK ON A SEARCH ENGINE. I MAKE NO GUARANTEES THAT THIS WILL WORK BY
   JUST DOUBLE CLICKING THE ICON.

NOW, IF YOU CAN GET THE PROGRAM TO RUN, BUT YOU ONLY GET SOME COLORED BOXES AT THE
BOTTOM AND THE SPRITE AT THE TOP, THEN SOMETHING IS WRONG. THE PROGRAM IS NOT LOCATING
THE .DAT FILE THAT SHOULD BE IN THE SAME DIRECTORY (FOLDER) AS THE PROGRAM. THIS IS
USUALLY A RESULT OF DOUBLE CLICKING THE PROGRAM'S ICON FROM WINDOWS. IF THIS IS WHAT
IS HAPPENING TO YOU, FIRST TRY GOING TO DOS MODE AND RUNNING IT. IF YOU STILL GET
PROBLEMS, GO TO THE PK HACK MESSAGE BOARD AND ASK THERE. **DO NOT MAIL ME ABOUT THIS!**
I WILL NEVER RESPOND, NOT ONLY DO I NOT WANT TO RESPOND, BUT I PROBABLY WON'T HAVE
INTERNET ACCESS WHERE I'M GOING ANYWAY.

IF THE GAME JUST CRASHES AND GIVES YOU AN "ALLEGRO" ERROR, THEN AGAIN THE PROBLEM IS
THAT YOU NEED TO RUN THE PROGRAM FROM DOS MODE. GO TO THE PK HACK MESSAGEBOARD AND
LOOK AROUND TO SEE HOW OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DEALT WITH THE PROBLEM. PEOPLE ASK THIS QUESTION
ALMOST EVERY WEEK, SO FIRST GO LOOK FOR THOSE TOPICS BEFORE STARTING YOUR OWN.

AGAIN, *DO NOT E-MAIL ME*. YOU WON'T GET A REPLY.

- Some sprites have incorrect palettes. Most notably the Mr. Saturn ATM, Insane Cultist,
and possibly the Ness head eyeball thing that opens up. If you see any other palette
   screw-ups, e-mail me.
- Some sprites might have incorrect palettes assigned. In fact, I know most of the
human ones do, but it doesn't matter too much (now), since the palette they use now has
the same palette values as their correct palette. It's complicated. Don't worry
   about this.
- You probably can't be playing MP3s or other music in Windows while running this
program. You can probably play CDs, though.
- Although I think I fixed it, there could still be a very small possibility that this
program will crash when you quit it. Also I think it can be evil sometimes and some
computers will reset or kick you off the modem or whatever. This is because the
programming library I used to make this wasn't designed for Windows systems. All I can
say is that you need to be careful. Don't worry, this isn't some evil program to hack
   your computer though.

KNOWN SPRITE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EARTHBOUND AND MOTHER 2:

- Ness is naked in Mother 2 while he has pajamas in EB
- EB has Ness' mom jumping or sitting, the M2 version is a box with an X in it.
- M2 has a mailbox opened sprite, the same sprite in EB is blank.
- The big red truck
- Octopus statue/Pencil statue
- Doll statue/eraser statue

CRAZY STUFF:

As I sit here eating some donuts, I just realized something. In Japan, there is a type
of donut called an andonut (andonuts). It's hard to explain unless you know what mochi
and anko are, but it's like a ball donut with a dark brown/red filling with a strange
texture. It's really good. Anyway, that's where Dr. Andonuts got his name. Maybe the
makers of the game really liked andonuts?

WHAT'S TO COME:

I don't know. I'd like spaanoft to add a better sprite editor into our PK Hack project,
but I don't think he'll want to now that people can already edit sprites. He better,
though, or I'll say, "Hey you guys," or something.

But, I doubt I'll be doing any updates to this program. There's not much more I could
do, other than make a nicer sprite selector, but I'm not going to do that. So there.
I may only make new versions if bugs are found and/or I fix some of the palette problems
with a few of the sprites.
