1. My ATI Radeon 8500 and Matrox G400/550 apply a lot of blurry filtering when using Mame32 w/ default settings.
2. I never could find an RGB effect or scanlines setting I liked for *all* games [moire patterns, etc].. and Aaron's D3D rewrite w/ overlay support is a ways away.
3. I altered effect RGB4 to produce a sharper, flatter image than the default by forcing Mame to pixel double before stretching to screen. It looks a lot better than the default blurry filtering.. of course, as an RGB effect it imposes a speed penalty.
4. To use, put the .exe in your \mame32 directory, launch Mame32_sharp set your resolution, choose 'rgb triad of 4 pixels' from the effect pulldown.

5. The only change to the source is in \windows\blit.c which follows, and also works in mame[w] if you want:

***

// table for 4-pixel RGB pattern
static struct rgb_descriptor rgb4_desc =
{
	4,
	{
		{ RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB, RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB },
		{ RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB, RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB },
		{ RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB, RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB },
		{ RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB, RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB,RGB }
	}
};
