You will need 3 things to use these patches:

1) Metal Gear (Japanese) ROM dump, from your legally owned cartridge of the
 game.

2) The patch of your choice. These are .ips files.

3) IPS.EXE or some similar IPS patching program. Consult your program of
choice's instructions on how to patch a file. This program is freely avaiable at many places on the internet, I recommend Zophar's Domain.
These patches are for the Japanese version of Metal Gear for the MSX2. If
you are a user of Cowering's Good utilities, you can really only use the
GoodMSX2 one to figure out which ROM you SHOULDN'T patch. The only Metal
Gear ROM in the GoodMSX2 database appears to be a bad ROM to begin with,
so you'll have to use the one that's not in the database and is much more
commonly available on the internet if you can't dump the cartridge that you
 own for some reason.

The file should be exactly 131072 bytes long. Windows users, right-click the
file in Explorer and click Properties. If it isn't then you'll have to
 redump to the proper size.

Explanation of the Different Patches:

Ok, what I'm releasing here is 2 patches. Each one translates the game fully
and is fully playable without error. The first one is the Literal patch and
the second is the Modern patch. The only difference between them is that the
Big Boss descriptions of the Ingram MAC-11 and Beretta M92F in the LITERAL
version is mis-spelled, like the original game, as "Ingrum" and "Belleta".
This is the way it was originally in the game and this version is for those
who like to keep the feel of the original on these 2 points. The MODERN
version has these names correctly spelled and nothing more. ("Ingram" and
"Beretta") The primary reason we think that the names were misspelled is for
copyright issues with the firearm manufacturers or some similar issue.

Which patch (spelling) you choose is up to you. The scripts are identical
 otherwise.

Explanation of the Nature of the Game Script:

The most important part. Takamichi Suzukawa and Jon Taylor worked very hard
to translate and proof-read the game script from the original Japanese. My
job was to figure out how to get all that into the game while still
maintaining the specific details, meaning, and context of the messages. It
wasn't easy and I can tell you there's at most ten bytes left in the script
area after my insertion. (Barely enough for Takamichi's first name :P) So
what you get here is a lot of hard work to convey as best as possible the
meaning of the original Japanese script.

All 155 messages are present and wherever possible are word-for-word
translations. (the UK version was missing 69 of them iirc) In addition,
Jon's idea was to make sure that the script was compliant with the "Previous
Operations" stories in Metal Gear Solid. I've done that so there is pretty
much perfect symmetry with the information about this game that appears in
 later games in the series.

There are some puns or jokes in the game script which probably didn't
translate too well because they have to do with Japanese culture, but I
think we've done a good transition nonetheless.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy playing the game with a complete script in
 english finally.
