Introduction
------------

This game was the first game of the 'Tales' series by Namco, released on the
Super FamiCom (SNES in the USA) back in 1994. It was never officially
translated and brought overseas. DeJap (www.dejap.com) fan-translated that
version, and it looks quite professional (except for a few... exaggerated,
M-rated parts). Namco then remade the game for the Sony Playstation in 1998.
This, too, did not see an English release. The GameBoy Advance version of
Tales of Phantasia is thus third release of the game, mixing elements from
the SFC and PSX versions. I won't ruin the story, other than saying that the
game opens with a battle, and that the hero is Cless Alvein, a 17 year old
swordsman. Anyway...

Patch History
-------------

v0.11 -- Bugfix patch. Klarth, Arche and Mint had screwed up spell lists.
This is only apparent if you reset the game (which I never tried).
It's fixed now. You can thank "trtwttrh trethtrheth" for e-mailing
          me with his problem.

V0.10 -- Second release. Here's a list of what's done:

         Item names.
Skill names (only in the START help screen).
         Ryouri/Cooking names.
         Title names.
         Redid the AI/Strategy choices.
         Playable Character default names.
         Completed more menu text.
Some hacking (to accommodate Chester's 7-letter name). This isn't
quite done yet (notably, in battle), but it was taking too long to
          figure out where to hack...
Some hacking in the Monster Zukan and Main Menu to accommodate the
word "Gald" and such. Also wrote out the word "Difficulty" and the
difficulty levels (they won't show up commpletely in the Custom
menu). Oh, and also in the shop screen. And the "TP Use" indicator.
Some more hacking in the various equip and status screens to
display "Slash" and "Stab", display a character's entire title,
display the full names of the equipment in the status screen, etc.
Chester's 7-letter name. Note that you can only get this by starting
a new game (or maybe hacking your save file), and it will be cut
down to six letters if you enter the naming screen for Chester. It
still only shows up as "Cheste" in certain places, like in battle
          and in the shortcut screen.
Inserted a new uppercase big font, but decided that it looked really
lame without variable widthing. Reverted to the old font.
And anything else I might have forgotten.

V0.01 -- The first release, on the... erm... same day that the game came out.
Yeah. I had one day to work on it. *sweatdrops from lying*

Status screen statistics are translated (not very prettily, though).
A bit of translation in the custom menu.
         Translated the AI settings.
Got frustrated from the backwards, ridiculous way that ToP GBA
stores information. Wait, that's not in the patch. Never mind.

Instructions
------------

Use an IPS patcher, such as IPS.EXE or ips XP (both available from, say,
www.zophar.net) to apply the .IPS patch to your ROM of Tales of Phantasia.
PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP FIRST!! If you don't like the patch
or if it is incompatible with later patches or with patches from someone else,
you don't want to have to re-download or re-copy the ROM image.

For example, with ips.exe (first backup the ROM!), place the patch file in
the same directory as the ROM. Open a command prompt/DOS prompt window and
type:
  ips <ROM filename> <patch filename>
(substituting filenames in for the angle brackets, of course). So if your ROM
file is called top.gba, type:
  ips top.gba topke010.ips
Your ROM should be patched! Pat yourself on the back :)

Also, some emulators have an auto-patcher. I believe you just rename the .ips
file to whatever your ROM name is and stick it in the same directory. So, if
your ROM is called "top.gba" name the patch file "top.ips".

Thanks to...

-Namco for doing at least a decent job on the latest ToP remake.
-Cless and Yetika Klaine for their great board and translation efforts! Good
 luck with everything!
-Gogeta75, Cyllya, ClesStahn, Stahn Ailron, and the other board members for
inspiration, info, just plain fun, and other stuff I probably forgot about.
-ZeroHiei for a suggestion on translating an AI option. Call him '0hiei'.
-NJStar Japanese word processor (www.njstar.com, I believe). Their radical
lookup and dictionary are REALLY good.
-Tenchi wielding the Illumina sword for making ips XP, which I used to make
 the actual IPS patch.
-Necrosaro for making Thingy. Ohh yeah.
-Hyllian of EmuCamp for making TableManager... that one helped.
-AnusP and the rest of J2E translations for their awesome pointer document!
And rpgd.emulationworld.com for hosting the copy that I read.
-SoftCircuits Programming for Cygnus, a handy hex editor.
-Zophar's Domain for being cool. And having utilities galore. At least they
don't have one foot in the grave anymore.
-And anyone else I forgot...
