Introduction
------------

(If you are familiar with the "Tales" series, skip the first paragraph. If you
have played this game before, heck, skip this whole section.)

This is where I'd go off on a spiel about how Namco made this game, and then
that one, and then etc. etc., but it's late enough at night that I won't. It
should suffice to say that this is the seventh "Tales" game to date, as far
as I know, including remakes. It is similar in concept to Narikiri Dungeon 1
for the GameBoy Color, but the battle system is imported from Tales of
Eternia from the PlayStation, a feat which never ceases to amaze me. The
battle system is basically a side-scrolling battle royale between your party
and that of the enemy. I'll let you experience that yourself.

In this particular game, as in the previous Narikiri Dungeon game, the main
characters are "Narikirishi" able to wear different clothing to gain their
abilities. For example, Frio can wear "Kenshi" (Swordsman) clothing and turn
into a knight with special skills pertaining to his trade. Fans of the Final
Fantasy series might take note that the system is similar to the Job systems
from FF3j, FF5, and (I think) FF Tactics.

Dang, I went off on a spiel anyway despite the time. Moving on...

Patch History
-------------

v1.34 -- Bugfix patch. Apparently, the game doesn't like 18 character
/1.337 location names. This was causing the freezing bug. I cut
location names down to 17 characters, so hopefully the bug
          should be fixed.

v1.33 -- Another patch! Stuff done:
          -Retranslated costume list.
-Retranslated skill list. Passive skills now have complete
descriptions. Active skills' descriptions are still in
Japanese. Only a few skill names have changed.
          -Monster book (zukan) completed.
-Strategy menu retranslated. It was needed badly.
-Location names retranslated (as in, the locations that appear
in the yellow box at the top inside dungeons).
-"Great Tree" changed to "Giant Tree" to be consistent with
the official translation of Tales of Symphonia.
-Retranslated character names. Not many changes.
          -Random text translated/retranslated.
-NPC party members with 7-letter names should have their entire
name show up in the Skills menu. Still a bit misaligned, though.
Also added information about the supposed freeze bug when playing
the game on a flashcart. See the Known Bugs section of the Notes
          section for more information.

v1.32 -- About to leave on vacation, so I thought I would release a patch.
-Retranslated item list and descriptions. All items should have
descriptions now, and a few item names were changed, most notably
           the 'seki' element stones.
-A correction or two here and there, like finally getting around
to changing 'zu' to 'dzu' in 'idzuna otoshi'.
-Hopefully this version doesn't add any bugs. If it does, switch
to v1.31, since I will be unable to address the bugs for a while.

v1.31 -- Erm... E3 2004. That's why. Graphics compression editing continues.
         New stuff:
-Menu graphics. The menu is now a step closer to full English.
-A few other graphical changes (such as the period in the small
           font).
          -Some more translation.

V1.30 -- This release is in celebration of... er... DeJap's Star Ocean patch
release! A mere two and a half months after the fact :)
Here is what was done during this busy/lazy period:

Started editing compressed graphics. The following is done:
-Title screen (not the TotW:ND2 logo yet... maybe never)
          -Flashing blue alerts
-Things similar to the flashing blue alerts
          -Town location names
          -World map location names
         Corrected some skill names.
Changed Regulus back to Eryante. Oops. (See Correction to v1.23)
Some other stuff I probably forgot.

V1.24 -- This release is in celebration of the release of Namco's Tales of
Phantasia remake/port for the GBA! New stuff:

Custom (Configuration) menu items fully translated! Yay!
Some other menu updates, like the formation menu.
         Character Zukan completed!

V1.23 -- Whee, this patch release is in celebration of Namco's release of
Tales of the World: Summoner's Lineage (known as "SamoRine" for
          short)! Here's what's new:

All the area subnames are done! Meaning, when you walk into an area
and a yellow box appears at the top of the screen, the text is in
english now, not japanese. If you see any japanese in these boxes
(I suspect that there might be one in the Hunter's Forest), please
          email me.
The patched ROM should now work on a flashcart (thanks go to Meteo).
Somehow screwed up fire-element priest's class name. It was supposed
to be "kitoushi" in japanese, or "master of prayer". It's now called
"Meditator". Have a better name? E-mail away.
Revised the Bonus Ability names and the related status screen.
Other changes, such as some very slight dialogue additions (like the
hunter standing at the entrance to Hunter's Forest).

Translation note: Namco USA, for some reason, seems to have changed
"Eryante" to "Regulus". If you don't know or remember who this is,
he's an ancient, great warrior in Tales of Eternia (Destiny II US).
I decided to go with Namco and call him Regulus just for continuity,
just like how I called the nekonin (catperson) costume Katz (which
is also from Tales of Eternia).

CORRECTION: Actually, Regulus was Regulus in the Japanese version as
(03/17/04) well. **MILD SPOILER** Apparently, the dungeons and Tales
references in ND2 are only reflections, or alternate
dimension, versions of the originals. Thus, Eryante is
an alternate version of Regulus. **END SPOILER**

V1.22 -- Thanks to Ayln, we now have a bunch of the item descriptions done!
Added spacing to location names and corrected them. Take note that the
ice cavern is supposed to be called Ice Cavern and the final dungeon
with the Tales characters is supposed to be Dragon Maze.
         Finished translated button configuration menu.
Changed a few skill names to cut off syllables instead of crushing the
name into the available space (eg, Yosorkbkushu -> Yosorakubaku)
NaitusaBell -> KnightSaber (D'oh... thanks, Cyllya)
FinalDungeon -> Ice Cavern (Thanks to someone on GameFAQs ND2 board)
         DragonMaze     -> Ice Cavern (Ditto)
Dycroft -> Floating City [of the Undead] (name correction)
IllusionCastle -> Phantom Castle (due to lack of screen real estate)
FinalDungeon -> Dragon Maze (name correction)
WhiteLatex -> BeautyLotion (thanks to... I forgot, sorry)
BlossomBlade -> Chizakura (the name of Suzu's ninja sword)
MoneyGoblin -> Food Change (it made no sense and sounded odd)
Fundakul -> Fundakle (Why not? I think it's what was intended.)
Ada -> Ayda (argh, Ada just doesn't convey the
                                 pronounciation)

V1.21 -- Mainly a bugfix patch:
-Fixed the "7-letter Tales cameo name" bug (not my fault, it was the
          original programmer...)
-Fixed some pointers that caused some skills to be displayed
incorrectly in battle (Raijinken showed up as "n", for example).
-Translated Suspend/Continue menu and resulting black screen text.
-Corrected some names. Erin -> Elaine, Eida -> Ada (pronounced
aid - ah), and Guraido -> Glide.
-Added hyphens for "san" and "chan". Ex: Polpol-san.

V1.20 -- Basically, all names are expanded, thanks to pointers. Some more
menu work was done, plus some corrections. At least we don't have
to deal with "Stn" and "Mnt" anymore...

V1.00 -- First version. This patch barely deals with dialogue/descriptions.
The main goal was to translate all menu text, monster names, zukan
info, interfaces, etc. Some things from the introduction aren't done
yet. Due to space limitations both onscreen and off, some things were
abbreviated beyond recognition. Other things were likely translated
horribly. Sorry. This version is kinda sucky, but it should help the
gamer that can't read kana very well (like me).

Instructions
------------

Use the file 133to134.ips if you are patching on top of v1.33 of the patch and
use nd2ke134.ips if you are patching on top of the original Japanese game.

Use an IPS patcher, such as IPS.EXE or ips XP (both available from, say,
www.zophar.net) to apply the .IPS patch to your ROM of Tales of the World:
Narikiri Dungeon 2. PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP FIRST!! If you don't like the patch
or if it is incompatible with later patches or with patches from someone else,
you don't want to have to re-download or re-copy the ROM image.

For example, with ips.exe (first backup the ROM!), place the patch file in
the same directory as the ROM. Open a command prompt/DOS prompt window and
type:
  ips <ROM filename> <patch filename>
(substituting filenames in for the angle brackets, of course). So if your ROM
file is called ND2.gba, and if it's the original Japanese version, type:
  ips nd2.gba nd2ke134.ips
Your ROM should be patched! Pat yourself on the back :)

If you are not familiar with DOS commands, I recommend getting a Windows-
based ips patcher, such as the previously mentioned ips XP. Just select the
ROM file (back it up first, or check the 'make a Backup' option!) and the
.ips patch file and click the 'apply patch' button, and your ROM should be
patched.

Also, some emulators have an auto-patcher. I believe you just rename the .ips
file to whatever your ROM name is and stick it in the same directory. So, if
your ROM is called "ND2.gba" name the patch file "ND2.ips". If you do this,
use the nd2ke***.ips file, NOT the ***to***.ips file, and make sure the .gba
file is the original Japanese version of the game.

NOTE: Please patch on top of the original Japanese game when using the nd2ke***
patch file. It may still work otherwise, but this is the safest thing to
      do.

Notes
-----

Please post or e-mail any info you might have regarding corrections or missed
Japanese that I didn't translate.

FIXED BUGS:

-NEW v1.33: I have heard that some flashcart owners have reported freezing
in the Ice Cavern or something like that. I have no idea if this is really
caused by my patch, whether it is fixed by now, if it was just a flashcart
problem, or what, but send me an email if it happens to you.

This has been fixed with v1.337, as far as I know. It also happened on
emulator, so it was not just a flashcart-only bug. It seemed to be
triggered by NPCs talking about 18 character location names within
dungeons. I cut all location names down to 17 characters, so this should
be fixed. Please email if there are still problems.

-Fixed a stupid bug introduced in V1.21 that prevented the game from running
on a flashcart. With V1.23 and above, it should work fine.
-In patch v1.00, changing costumes multiple times resets the game. This does
not happen any more. (Stupid, stupid bug...)

If you still have problems with this, it is probably because you are using
savestates. Save the game normally (using the in-game Save menu) and reset.
Use the Continue option at the title screen. The problem should be fixed.
Save over your old savestate to make sure the problem stays fixed :).

If that doesn't work, you probably either have a corrupt ROM (stick the
cartridge into your linker and try again), or you didn't patch it right.

KNOWN BUGS:

-This isn't really a bug, but the blue box at the top of the battle screen
that appears when you use a skill has a set size. Now that many skill names
are expanded, they will stretch far beyond the blue box (for example,
Souryuurengazan). I don't know how to increase the box size.
-When you start a new game, the default name for Kyaro is "Karo" ("Kyar" for
older patch versions). I can't get it to display more than four letters for
 default names.
-Race's shop. If you talk to Race in a dungeon, he may ask you if you want to
buy items. Currently, due to the fact that the item names are much longer
than the Japanese item names, the display will get messed up. Anyway, Race
sells the follwing items (at high prices):
   Apple Gummy
   Orange Gummy
   Panacea Bottle
   Change Stick
   Pickaxe
   Lockpick Set
 (In that order.)
This also apparently applies to Gamel (thanks to Ayln).

A rough list of things that were translated:
-Skill names and the corresponding text that appears at the top of the screen
 in battle.
-Passive skill descriptions.
-Item names and item effects, with v1.32.
-Character names, fully finished v1.33. Mostly done long before that.
-Character zukan/book, with v1.24.
-Enemy names. Some are abbreviated, and this will not change until either
   a) I decide to become untrue to the original game (unlikely) or
   b) I or someone else figures out a variable width font (also unlikely).
And even then, names will likely get a character or two more at most.
-Monster zukan/book, with v1.33.
-Costume/clothing names. Same deal about abbreviations. Updated with v1.33;
now complete including the expanded/Japanese name given in the clothing/
 costume zukan/book.
-Location names. Meaning, a townsperson might now be able to say something
like "%!#[Meredy]#@[Water Castle]@#%#@^#^#". With V1.23, this now includes
sub-area location names like "Thieves' Hideout". These sub-area names were
 updated in v1.33.
-Lots of assorted menu stuff. Too lazy to delve into details here. The shops
should be mostly or fully translated.
-SOME easy dialogue, like Stebia and Fundakle's "Welcome!" and "Come again!"
Also Sister Miru's offer to rest (roughly). Probably the most important one
is for new players: Lyle's question about whether you want to give up the
 quest.
-Black screen text for when you suspend the game. Also the suspend menu.
-Menu text is mostly done. This includes the flashing blue things (v1.30) and
 the main menu options (v1.31).

Character Limits for different things:

Passive Skill/Item Descriptions 36 characters
Active Skill Descriptions 18 characters
Skills (in Battle) 18 characters
Location Names (within dungeons) 17 characters
Items 13 characters
Skills (in Menu) 12 characters
Monster Names 10 characters
Costume Names 9 characters
Tales character/NPC names 8 characters

Since I figured out pointers, many (but not all) of the internal limitations
are moot.

Some things that follow Namco USA's translation:

Nekonin --> Katz
Taiju --> Giant Tree (I originally had "Great Tree")
NOT Eryante --> Regulus... oops.

-[J3D!] of DeJap for making Search Relative 2. Boy, I never would have found
the right hex codes without getting Gogs to run this baby.
-Hyllian of EmuCamp for making TableManager... that one helped.
-AnusP and the rest of J2E translations for their awesome pointer document!
And rpgd.emulationworld.com for hosting the copy that I read.
-SoftCircuits Programming for Cygnus, a handy hex editor.
-Whoever made GBACrusher and gbalzss for graphics compression/decompression.
-Helljiraichi and everyone else from the GameFAQs ND2 board that contributed
regarding the (now hopefully fixed) dungeon freezing bug.
-Zophar's Domain for being cool. And having utilities galore. I thought
they were down, but they were back up in a day or two.
-And anyone else I forgot...
