    LEGAL INFORMATION
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEUGIER is copyright Wolf Team / Telenet Japan.

This patch is designed to be applied to an image of a Neugier ROM. In most
jurisdictions and situations it will be illegal to possess such images, or legal
to possess them only where an original Neugier cartridge is owned; or the image
may have to have been taken from this original cartridge for backup purposes.
This means that you may not legally be able to use this patch. It is your
responsibility to ensure that you comply with all the relevant laws applicable
in the jurisdiction under which you reside. The author of this patch IN NO WAY
condones the illegal possession or distribution of copyrighted material.

THIS TRANSLATION PATCH is copyright 2001 Haeleth.

You may distribute this patch freely, as long as the following conditions are
met:

1. You shall not charge users for the patch.

2. The patch shall never be distributed without or separately from this file.

3. You shall not supply the patch in such a way that users cannot access the
patch without infringing copyright.
This means that you MAY NOT distribute
   - a ROM image with the patch applied;
   - the patch and a ROM in a single file (eg zipped);
   - the patch and a ROM as part of any other package (eg on CD).
If a site from which you intend to supply the patch contains or links to illegal
content, such as ROM images or 'warez', you must place the patch on a separate
page from such content, and ensure that there is no possibility that the two be
confused.

4. You shall make modifications to the patch only with the explicit and prior
consent of the editor. This includes the release of corrected versions,
alternative fonts, translations into other languages (see below), and so on.
I encourage all these activities, but I'd like to know about them in advance.

FURTHER TRANSLATIONS

These days more and more games are being translated into languages other than
English. If you want to translate Neugier into another language, please
contact me. You'll only need permission if you want to use this patch as a
base - but even if you want to work from the original Japanese ROM, I'll be
very happy to supply you with tables, script dumps, and so on, which should save
you a lot of work.

Polite responses are not likely to be given to ROM requests, translation

    REPORTING BUGS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first thing to do if you find a bug is to check I don't know about it. I'll
put a bug list on Hlees wendende.

You can report any type of bug or glitch, with a few exceptions...
- Don't report gameplay bugs (freezing, etc.) if they also occur in the original
Japanese version; those are nothing to do with me.
- If reporting spelling errors, make sure they really are errors. I use British
spellings, and the odd archaic form.
- If reporting translation errors, make sure that the sense is substantially
altered. I've had to make a number of cuts to fit the script in.

One particular type of glitch you may notice is a text window containing only
a single hexadecimal number. This means that a string has not been inserted,
usually because I've identified it as unused, and left it out to save space.

    GETTING HELP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you don't know what to do with the patch, or you have problems applying it,
then read the patching FAQ at the Whirlpool (http://donut.parodius.com). If
that doesn't help, you can usually get more specific advice by posting on the
board there - but remember to make it clear that you've read the FAQ, and ask
nicely, or some of the regulars may be a little short with you. In the last
resort, contact me directly. However, I shall NOT supply ready-patched copies
of the ROM under any circumstances, so please don't ask me to.

For help with the game, you could do worse than to try my Neugier FAQ, available
from Hlees wendende or GameFAQs. Just try not to spoil your fun too much.

    NOTES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Emulator compatibility

(This section is for informational purposes only. While emulation is not
intrinsically illegal, the use of rom images may be; see disclaimer above.)

In all cases I have used the most recent version of the emulator which I
possess. In "incompatible" emulators, the game freezes before the title screen
is displayed. New releases of these emulators may correct this.

COMPATIBLE EMULATORS:
  Champi Snes
  Snes9x

INCOMPATIBLE EMULATORS:
  NLKE
  SNEeSe
  SNEmul
  ZSnes

2. Limits of the translation

The credits sequence, and the names of monsters, were already in English. I
have corrected spellings in both places. The names in the credits are
untouched, even where the romanisation was inconsistent, with one exception:
in the second THANKS screen, I have abbreviated Hiroshi Hashimoto's given name
to H.

The title screen has not been replaced with an English version. Since the
English title is given on it, I see no need to mess with the artwork. Besides,
it's compressed.

The game's menus also compressed, and have not been translated. These are
explained below, so I don't expect this to cause many problems. Besides, they
aren't intrinsic to the game.

3. Untranslated menus

In all cases, the selected option is yellow.

   NEW GAME MENU

When you press a key on the title screen, you're presented with two options.
The option on the left starts a new game; that on the right takes you to the
load menu.

   LOAD MENU

Neugier has two save slots. When you select either game, you're presented
with a choice of two options. Select the left option to confirm, and the right
option to cancel. Press the 'cancel' button to return to the title screen.
When you load a game, you start at the beginning of the stage where it was
saved, regardless of where you were when you saved.

   SAVE MENU

Identical to the load menu, except that when you leave the menu, either by
saving a game or by cancelling, you're presented with a second decision to make.
Pick the left option to continue playing, and the right option to return to the
title screen.

   GAME OVER SCREEN

Once again, there are two options. Select the left option to continue playing
from the start of the stage where you died; select the right option to go to the
save menu (NOT the load menu as you might expect). Saving now will be exactly
the same as saving at any other time - you'll continue from the start of the
stage when you load.

4. Character names

Bokey (Bogii)
I'm pretty sure they didn't mean to call him "bogie" - hence the change.

Duke (Dyuuku): pronounced 'dyook', not 'dook'.

Gunther (Gyuntaa): pronounced 'gunter', not 'gunther'.
The offical roman form was Gunter. I'm interpreting this as a German name,
   hence my spelling.

Secia (Seshia): pronounced 'seSHIa', not 'seSIa', 'SEsha', etc.
The spelling is the roman form used in the game.

Wein (Wein): pronounced as 'vine' or 'wayne'.
The latter is the actual Japanese pronunciation, but I prefer to interpret
it as another German name. Feel free to disagree.

Why all these German names? Simply because "Neugier" is itself a German word,
meaning 'curiosity, inquisitiveness'. See my FAQ for details.

5. Was this translation necessary?

You may have heard rumours of an American release. If I may quote my FAQ...

  Mike Evans (mikejevans@uswest.net) writes:
"Neugier was planned for release in the US as "The Journey Home", but was
never officially released, so a prototype cartridge may exist (in
Nintendo's hands, if anyone), but no official release."

Well, although unreleased carts DO turn up (Starfox 2 beta, Earthbound
Zero), the chances are, frankly, that this one was lost years ago, if it
  ever existed.

Even after all this work, I do sort of hope it turns up - it'd be interesting
to compare it with this version.

6. Just how short IS this game?

I can complete it in about forty minutes without cheating (in which I include
the use of save states), much less with. I imagine anyone could match that with
practice. I'm not planning to record people's best times or anything, but I
would like to hear from anyone who manages to achieve Gokutsubushi rank without
cheating!
